Green Gold Label (GGL)

The Green Gold Label (GGL) is an international certification program for sustainable biomass.

GGL was established in 2002 and is owned by the Green Gold Label Foundation. GGL is one of the oldest biomass certification programs and has a unique track record in the certification and monitoring of sustainable biomass. Certification against GGL is conducted by independent, accredited third-party certification bodies. GGL certification covers the entire supply chain for bioenergy and biobased applications, from production, processing, transportation, and end-use. The scope includes woody, agricultural residue, and waste wood biomass, as well as bioliquids.

Green Gold Label focuses primarily on two market segments:

1. biomass for the production of bio-based chemicals and other products
2. Biomass for electricity and heat production

GGL standards also cover energy and carbon data that must be provided throughout the supply chain. Transaction certificates are issued for transactions between GGL-certified companies in the supply chain.

The GGL standard covers a wide range of different areas and scopes. Specific standards may apply depending on the exact nature of your business, for example:

• Chain of custody
• Forest management resources
• Agricultural resources
• Generators/facilities (energy producers)

GGL certification allows you to demonstrate that you, as a biomass producer, trader, supplier or manufacturer, can meet customer needs in terms of sustainability assurance, timber origin documentation and product information.
