4C Certification

What is the Purpose of the 4c Label?

The 4C label offers a solution that supports your sustainability strategy by implementing best practices in social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

What are the Fundamental Guarantees of 4c?

The Coffee Community Common Code guarantees that coffee cultivation does not contribute to deforestation or biodiversity loss, that good agricultural practices are implemented and soil, water, and air are protected, that human, labor, and land rights are respected, and that farmers have adequate training to increase productivity and profitability.

How is the 4c Label Obtained?

Certification by an independent certification body such as TRANS enables you to verify that your activities comply with the 4C standard. The logo can be used on-pack and off-pack (e.g., green coffee bean bags, brochures, websites, etc.). The 4C logo and 4C-related claims can be used on packaging provided the product contains at least 90% 4C certified coffee. Initially, packaging must contain at least 30% 4C certified coffee and be given a maximum of three years to reach 90%.

Who can hold 4C certification?

Managing Entity (ME) and Business Partners (BP), which are producers (small and large farms) and service providers (traders, storage facilities, and processors operating within the 4C unit). Intermediate Buyer (IB): Any trader, exporter, importer, processor, or organization that trades or produces 4C certified coffee outside the 4C Unit. Final Buyer (FB): The final actor in the supply chain that purchases 4C certified coffee (roaster, instant coffee manufacturer, private label company, private label retailer, brand owner, coffee shop chain, or any organization that sources 4C certified coffee).

Market scope and impact – By 2023, more than 1.4 million coffee farmers in over 25 countries will hold 4C certification, covering approximately 3 million tons of green coffee production annually. In the cocoa sector, initial pilot implementations in Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Latin America have already certified more than 50,000 smallholder farmers, with plans to expand to other production regions.

Benefits of 4C certification

For farmers

Access to training on best practices, improving yield and quality.
Improved market access, typically with a small premium.
Enhanced organizational capacity through group structures.

Why are these benefits important?

4C certification creates a common foundation in coffee and cocoa supply chains, establishing shared expectations and measurable improvements; it enables all stakeholders to collaborate more effectively on sustainability goals while ensuring that smallholder farmers, supply chain actors, brands, and consumers share social, economic, and environmental benefits.
